Ethics of the Proximity

Issue content

Title :  The small and the big. For an ethics of proximity
Author(s) :  Laurent, Bibard
Abstract :  The media put us in touch with global issues, and as a result we should all feel concerned. But since the ethics issue is monopolized by the state, which practises a priori and a posteriori control, everyone feels a deep sense of impotence at best, resignation at worst, and France is still the most poorly ranked of the wealthy nations in terms of corruption. Rediscovering the meaning of the ethics of proximity means finding a sense of accountability and managing our own local issues in accordance with globally acceptable values.

Title :  Adam and Eve face the snake. Would bargains and incivilities maintain relations of proximity? Explanation by loop effects
Author(s) :  Christian, Bourion
Abstract :  Since the war, one popular movement of thought has identified dishonesty with resistance and honesty with collaboration. Its supporters have become accustomed to letting the state deal with regulation. This has therefore increased regulatory bodies, so much so that France is now the third country in the developed world for civil servants’ salaries, the second for levels of public expenditure and the first for the number of elected representatives per capita. The problem is that results are not achieved. Indeed, France is ranked as the worst country in the industrialized world for corruption by the Institute of Economic Affairs (2006) and the third world power out of the 21 wealthiest countries for the perception of corruption of elected representatives and officials by Transparency International (2007). The question therefore arises at to whether the process of delegating local regulation is not, by its very nature, doomed to failure in the absence of a sense of individual accountability and proximity ethics.

Title :  Why do elected officials give in to the temptation of clientelism? The example of the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur region
Author(s) :  Philippe, Sanmarco
Abstract :  This paper begins with an introduction to clarify what we are talking about. We then try to see how patronage works as a link to a third party, and analyze the economic, social and political framework that this implies. A fourth section is devoted to the consequences of “cronyism” in politics. We then conclude by proposing some remedies.

Title :  Ethics alert and company employees Is it a forced marriage?
Author(s) :  Alexandra, Mauduit
Abstract :  The wake-up call was brutal following scandals such as Enron or WorldCom, which revealed the flaws of a poorly controlled system. They justified the implementation of a new reorganization of businesses, including control processes at all levels, with the goal of maximum transparency. In order to analyze this new type of behaviour, we felt it would be interesting to focus on one aspect of professional ethics which has recently been the subject of controversy: whistleblowing. It therefore seems appropriate to analyze this method of internal control, which companies listed on Wall Street are obliged to comply with, but which appears to conflict with certain cultural practices.

Title :  Brave employees, yes, but heroes or informers? From whistleblowing to ethical alert
Author(s) :  Françoise, de Bry
Abstract :  The introduction of whistleblowing (alerte éthique in French) in the French business resulted from the promulgation on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2002). The whistleblowing is the exposure by the employees actions who did not complied with American specifications (financial or account with SOX Act, but it’s possible to widen at all outlawed actions in business). In France, the managers, the union activist, the politic men ... enquire about the practical application of whistleblowing. We make first a synthetic tableau of the whistleblowing in the world (without USA and France) and then, we study his application in United-States. In fine, the question is : can do it the whistleblowing’s model of USA in France ? Why? Because there are many cultural and legal problems of accommodation.

Title :  Why ethical charters? The example of business coaching
Author(s) :  Sybille, Persson
Abstract :  Coaching, as the practice of accompanying managers in order to maximize their performance, remains in the media spotlight. Beyond the humanistic virtues that coaching is often cloaked in, the discourse of prominent practitioners seeks to justify the morality of this fledgling profession. With this aim, coaching federations enforce codes of conduct, promote contractual relationships between the parties and invite coaches to be supervised in order to cope with the sensitive matter of coach-coached transfer. This movement constitutes a powerful means to proclaim legitimacy that does not, however, preclude the question of the personal ethics of the coach.

Title :  Humanistic management. Stakes, tools and obstacles
Author(s) :  Stéphanie, Arnaud
Abstract :  Can economic efficiency and humanistic values walk hand in hand with companies? In order to enlighten this issue we will try to answer the three following questions: 1/ Which managing tools and HRM policy should be set up in order to support humanistic values? 2/ What are the empirical evidences that such an HRM policy would lead to economic efficiency? More precisely what would be the consequences of such a policy on motivation and implication of employees? 3/ Which obstacles, difficulties and limits are encountered by a company that implements a humanistic management?

Title :  The look of 313 websites on the meaning given to ethics
Author(s) :  Christian, Bourion ; Sybille, Persson
Abstract :  On a horizon with the colour of the triple bottom line with the three “Ps” - Profit, People, Planet - Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) stands out as a subject that causes a lot of ink to flow on both sides of the Atlantic. According to the European definition, CSR requires voluntary integration by companies of social and environmental concerns in their business and their relationships with their stakeholders. However, even if this definition tends to be used as a reference, CSR is a long way from becoming an established concept.

Title :  An international perspective on the meaning given to ethics in France. Between the German-speaking and English-speaking approaches and the French-speaking approach, there are differences that can be radical
Author(s) :  E. Günter, Schumacher
Abstract :  This article examines the notion and the concept of “éthique” in French culture from an international point of view, via a comparative and historical analysis. The study focuses on the different adaptations of the notion of “éthique” in German-speaking, English-speaking and French-speaking cultures, and on the different ways that connections between economic, political and ethical considerations have evolved in these three cultures. In today’s globalized world, this comparative approach makes it possible, on one hand, to avoid the trap of French ethnocentrism in academic debate and, on the other hand, to reveal the utility of a macro-ethical perspective completing the micro/meso-ethical approach.

Title :  A philosophical look at the meaning of ethics. Ethical or moral?
Author(s) :  Jean-François, Clément
Abstract :  In French, the words “éthique”, of Greek origin, and “morale”, of Latin origin, both nouns and adjectives, mean the same thing in etymological terms, a reflection on the manners of people. So why differentiate between these terms? A review of the history of ideas shows that it is always a question of abandoning, for a wide variety of reasons, one position in favour of another perceived as superior.
