Titre :  Running head: perceptions of death. Person Perceptions of Death with a Japanese and an American Target

Résumé :  We propose that perceivers use culturally based contextual cues to assist them when forming trait judgments of individuals who commit suicide. American participants were shown a picture story detailing the life and death of an individual who was raised in either an individualistic or collectivistic society. The death of the target person was manipulated by describing either a suicide or a car accident, and we included a control group in which the target person was alive. Participants evaluated the target person on the domains of morality, shallowness, selfishness, intelligence, boringness, and likeability. Results supported our hypothesis that participants’ perceptions of the death of the target person were significantly affected by the target’s cultural background. Most importantly, these differences were found only in the domains of impression that are relevant to cultural connotations of suicide, such as morality, shallowness, selfishness. The target’s different cultural background did not affect impressions on the irrelevant impression domains such as intelligence, boringness. The theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.
