Résumé : |
Nicolas Bourriaud orchestrated his departure from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris after he was dismissed by the Minister of Culture. He stages a parodic show before his office in the Academy of Fine Arts, a ceremony I attended. I put this episode in perspective to better understand what circumstances caused this scandal and what ensued in the art world. To better explain what is at stake, I identify a role, that of the “creative leader”, who is supposed to fulfill all the missions pertaining to the direction of large cultural and artistic institutions
today. One must admit that multiple stakeholders, in addition to the line ministry’s expectations, put in jeopardy all forms of accomplishments in this role. Must the creative leader develop new projects or find extra funding to caulk the cracks of the walls? Is change urgent or should long time structural changes, quietly transforming on the cusp of the world, dominate? It seems all of that must be done, right now. Yet many contradictions appear in the present, looking back and looking forward. In this text, our goal is to better understand legitimation and delegitimation processes of the “creative leader” and what it involves for the art world and artists, especially budding artists. |
