Résumé : |
For a long time French sociology was only interested in norms, rules, "structure" ; now it is concentrating most of its attention on action. The recourse to life histories seems to fit more easily into this new perspective than into the previous one. However, the hermeneutic analysis of a life history does not easily avoid the steepest slope, which is psychological. How can we develop the sociological aspect of the analysis of objects (conduct in situation, "semantic" interactions between relatives, etc) where the psychological and the social are closely mingled? By remembering that every action is done in situation, in a context; that it is also part of interactions with relatives and friends, that it is always in some way conduct that expresses a "habitus" produced by the totalising of earlier experiences. The
example of a young woman receiving an allowance as a single parent (a supplementary benefit from which other income is deducted) who however continues to do hours of cleaning that she declares for tax purposes, makes it possible to show the complexity of relations between objective situation, relational situation and conduct. In this example, the life
history reveals not only the truth of the actress but the falseness of the common sense discourse about "Welfare mothers". |
